Sault College Men’s Curling claims Canadian Championship Silver

London, ON:  Saturday evening in the forest city of London the Sault College Men’s Curling team advanced to its first ever national final at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships.

The Cougars faced off against its Ontario rivals Humber College in rematch of the last round robin game as the Hawks defeated University of Alberta – Augustana in the semi-final.

The team of alternate Robert Taylor (Barrie/Forestry), lead Brad Manson (Sault/Police), second Kyle Sherlock (Thessalon/Public Relations), vice Josh Vanderburg (Sault/Digital Film) and skip Matt Mann (Renfrew/Public Relations) are the first team to ever play for a Canadian Championship in the history of Sault College.

The game proved to be a battle of consistency early with both squads exchanging single points and one blank end mid-way through the contest to enter the fifth end break tied at two. In the sixth end with hammer the Humber foursome capitalized on a Cougars miss and took three to go up 5-2.

With a blank seventh end and the Sault men pressing to generate offence and produce points another near miss created a steal of 3 for the Hawks. The Cougars continued to fight to the end scoring two in the ninth but were eventually run out of the rocks in the tenth to surrender the championship 8-4.

The second place finish in Canada is the highest finish by a Sault College team ever and is a true testament to the dedication and pride these young men have wearing the college colours.  Along with the national medals Vanderburg was named to the All Canadian team for the week long competition.

As we congratulate the historic achievement of the men’s team; the Cougars begin preparation for the 16-17 season as they vie to return to the National Stage in 2017 as the CCAA Championships will go west to Camrose, Alberta.
