Sault native, and two-time Stanley Cup winning NHL hockey legend Ron Francis has officially joined a new team, but it's not what you think.

After a 23 season professional hockey career, consisting of 1,798 career points, 1,249 total assists, and 1,731 games played, Francis retired from playing in 2004, but stayed in the game. He became general manager of the Hurricanes being demoted to president of hockey operations in March.

Having been fired from that position in April, Francis is changing careers.

He will join NAI Carolantic Realty dealing with commercial real estate investments, according to The Triangle Business Journal.

Francis spent the last two months of 2018 taking real estate classes and obtaining his brokerage license.

Although he remains an investor in the ownership group of the Hurricanes and ONC Arena, Hurricanes Holdings LLC until November 2019, media has reported that Francis has not watched any Hurricanes games this season, in-person or on television.

This career decision allows him and his family to stay in the Raleigh, North Carolina, and he is "very excited about the opportunity."
