It wasn’t quite the ideal win but the Soo Greyhounds now have an opportunity to sweep its first road trip of the Ontario Hockey League season.

Shootout goals by Jack Kopacka and Gustav Bouramman were the difference as the Greyhounds beat the London Knights 3-2 in front of an announced crowd of over 9,000 at Budweiser Gardens in London on Friday night.

For Greyhounds Coach Drew Bannister, the team seemed out of sync in the win.

“Other than Ray, it wasn’t a very good hockey game,” Bannister said. “We just weren’t in sync. We were sloppy and weren’t very crisp.”

“Not to say we didn’t deserve to win, our goalie played really well towards then end and made some really key saves,” Bannister said. “We just weren’t very sharp, but there are games throughout the season where you play really well and deserve to win and you don’t get the bounces. We didn’t play very well and got a really good performance from our goaltender and managed to grind out a win.”

After returning from the New York Rangers training camp that he attended as a free agent invite, Raaymakers picked up his second win in as many starts with 35 saves. The third-year netminder also stopped two of the Knights three shooters in the shootout.

“He played fantastic,” Bannister said. “He made some really big saves. He’s one guy that you can say really came to play today. He was really outstanding.

Bannister said Raaymakers will get the start in Sunday’s trip finale.

“He deserves it and that’s what starting goalies do,” Bannister said.

Morgan Frost had a goal and an assist in regulation time while Bobby MacIntyre also scored for the Greyhounds.

“Coming in against a very good team that knows how to win, we were able to keep our composure near the end and get through the overtime and into the shootout and win a hockey game,” Bannister said.

Emanuel Vella made 34 saves for the Knights in what was his first start of the season

Cliff Pu had a goal and an assist for the Knights while Victor Mete had the other London goal.

The road trip wraps up on Sunday afternoon in Sarnia as the Greyhounds face the Sting.
