With Ontario University Athletics (OUA) play in all sports in hiatus until January 2021, the teams at Algoma University continue to prepare for when university sports make a return.

OUA president and CEO Gord Grace made the announcement in early June that “all OUA-sanctioned sport-programming and championships” have been cancelled up to Dec. 31, 2020.

On Friday, Algoma’s women’s basketball team announced the signing of 5-2 point guard Gracie Batongbakal of Winnipeg, Man.,

Highly touted, Batongbakal is coming off an all-star season with Winnipeg’s Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and is one of three commitments this summer for the Algoma women.

The team received commitments from forward Bethany Balaktsis, who was a teammate of Batongbakal in Winnipeg and Thunder Bay product Allison Reed.

On Thursday, the men’s basketball team announced the signing of point guard Matthew Green.

In the spring, the team added 6-4 guard/forward Bigus Bangoura, who spent last season playing college basketball in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association with Ottawa-based La Cite. Bangoura finished second on the Coyotes in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game in 14 games.

Earlier this month, the men’s soccer team announced the signing of goalkeeper Stephen Bowen of Trinidad and Tobago, who is set to attend the school in the fall.
