Record-setting day in high school track

The Sault Ste. Marie city high school track meet on Wednesday saw a number of city records beat in the day-long event
running sprinter

It was a successful day for the women at the Sault Ste. Marie city track and field championships on Wednesday.

The day saw five new city records set in girls events and another record tied as track athletes from across the city’s high schools converged on Jo Forman

Alyssa Rizzo of St. Mary’s tied a city record in the midget girls long jump thanks to a jump of 5.04m.

Rizzo also took top spot in the midget girls 100m dash with a time of 12.73 seconds and the midget girls 400m dash with a time of 1:02.94.

Rizzo was also a member of the St. Mary’s team that won the midget girls 4X100m event with a time of 55.43 seconds. The Knights team included Gabbe Zagordo, Riley Coventry and Jayme Meser.

Coventry took top spot in the midget girls 200m dash with a time of 29.66.

At the junior level, three records were set.

Olivia Orazietti of St. Mary’s posted a mark of 12.41 seconds in junior girls 100m dash, topping a record from 1993.

Orazietti also won the junior girls 200m dash with a time of 27.31 seconds.

Thanks to a jump of 11.05m, Hanna Jodoin of Korah won the junior girls triple jump to set a new city record.

Jodoin also won the junior girls 3000m event with a time of 12:46.63. Jodoin also was a member of the Colts team in the 4X100m relay that finished first with teammates Shea-Lynn Gioia, Leah Ritacco and Jadyn Deschene-Pettenuzo.

Jodoin was also a member of Korah’s 4X400m team that won the open event. The team consisted of Deschene-Pettenuzo, Mackenzie Rains and Cameron Mihell.

Taylor Elliott of Korah set a new record in the junior girls shot put (11.03m).

Elliott also finished first in the junior girls discus throw (25.06m).

Catherine Mesich of Superior Heights finished first in the midget girls 800m run (2:42.69) and 1500m run (5:38.07).

Alyssa Desgagne of Superior Heights also won two events, finishing in top spot in the midget girls 200m hurdles (53.80 seconds) and midget girls 80m hurdles (14.41 seconds).

The other record set on Wednesday saw Taryn Lamorie of St. Mary’s post a distance of 5.30m in the senior girls long jump.

Lamorie had a big day with first-place finishes in three other events. Lamorie, along with teammates Emily Calibani, Olivia Orazietti and Alicia Gibbs won the 4X100m senior girls event with record-setting time of 50.47.

Lamorie also took top spot in the senior girls 100m dash (12.44 seconds) and 200m (26.01 seconds).

Other senior girls multi-event winners included Rachel Winchester (Superior Heights) who took first in shot put (10.23) and discus throw (25.87m) and Kara Neveau of St. Mary’s, who won the senior 1500m run (5:45.53) and 3000m run (13:19.16).

In the midget boys events, Caleb Patteri (Korah) won four events. Patteri won the 100m dash (11.63 seconds), 200m dash (24.07 seconds), long jump (5.15m) and the 4X100m relay with teammates Luke May, James Gibbs and Jordan Robinson-Wright (50.10).

Caleb Dawson of White Pines took two events, winning the midget boys shot put (9.87m) and javelin (43.26).

In junior events, Nick Gervasi of Korah had three first-place-finishes (4X100m relay, 400m dash and discus).

Andrew Budau of Korah also won three events (800m run, 1500m run and 300m run) while Ben Baggs took a pair of events (100m hurdles and triple jump)

Skyler Miceli of St. Mary’s took the 100m dash (11.27 seconds) and 200m dash (24.07 seconds).

In senior events, Colton Read of St. Mary’s finished first in three events including the 200m and 400m dashes and the 4X100m relay.

Nick Keenan of Superior Heights finished first in the senior 800m run and 1500m run and 4X400m relay. Keenan’s teammate in the relay, Max Fisher also had a first place finish in the 400m hurdles.

Andrew Jones of Korah had first place finishes in the 100m dash and long jump.

Korah had the top team score with 882 points. The Colts finished nine points ahead of Superior Heights.

Korah secured 442 points in the girls events and 440 points in the boys events, which were tops on both sides.
