Precautions implemented ahead of national curling event locally

With COVID-19 numbers in the region rising of late, organizers of the 2021 Canadian Senior Curling Championship announced a number of precautions implemented for the six-day event at the Community First Curling Centre.

Among the precautions in place are:

• everyone entering the curling centre, including players, must show proof of full
• vaccination
• spectators and staff will be required to wear masks in the public areas
• capacity limit within the curling centre will be cut to 50 percent or 120 persons
• seating within the curling centre will follow social distancing rules with tables six feet
• apart
• bleacher seating will also include social distancing
• full sanitizing of seating areas and other public spaces

“With the guidance of Algoma Public Health, we feel confident we can run a safe and successful event,” said tournament chair Al Harnden in a prepared statement.

With a capacity limit in place, Harnden added that the initial ticket packages planned for the tournament are not possible at this point.

“We had intended to offer a variety of ticket packages for the event but that’s simply not possible with fifty percent capacity at the rink,” Harnden said, adding that 75 full-event packages are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In total, 110 curlers from across the country are set to arrive in the city on Dec. 4 for the event, which kicks off on Dec. 6.
