Playoff season in women's hockey

Source for Sports, Crawford's Canines, Investors Group and Algoma Insurance have all advanced to the semi-finals in the local Women's Hockey League. Lafarge and Play It Again Sports qualified for the "Cellar Stars" series.

Source for Sports, Crawford's Canines, Investors Group and Algoma Insurance have all advanced to the semi-finals in the local Women's Hockey League.

Lafarge and Play It Again Sports qualified for the "Cellar Stars" series. Those two teams will battle for fifth position in a two-game total points playoff series beginning next Monday.

After a slow start in opening-round action, first place Source for Sports regrouped to score four unanswered goals and defeat Play It Again Sports 5-1. Gayle Trivers opened the scoring for Play It Again with an unassisted effort four minutes into the game. Jenny Sayers evened the score before the end of the period, paving the way for a strong Source for Sports finish. Karen Bell scored twice while Heidi Frech and Amanda Fata each had one. Barb Willoughby had two assists while Amanda Fata, Rosalie Boissoneau, Natalie King, Amber Lahti and Jennie Pearce had one assist each.

Fifth place Algoma Insurance upset second place Crawford's Canines 6-3 with a spirited effort. The win moves Algoma into the final four. Crawford's second place league standing assures them a spot in the final four, however the road just got bumpier since they now face first place Source for Sports.

Mona Jones led Algoma's attack with a hat trick and one assist. Theresa Glover scored twice, while Joanne Pine scored once and added one assist. Andrea Moraca had two assists and Michelle Irwin pitched in with one assist. The Canines' Donna May Sayers-Lariviere had a goal and an assist, while Joanne Jones and Pam Linklater each scored once. Lisa Venier had two assists.

Investors Group advanced to the semis with a 4-2 win over Lafarge. Scoring for Investors were Ellen MacDougall (2) and one assist, Patti Lutz (1) and an assist, Michelle Dillenbeck (1) and an assist. Teammates Cassidy Boudreau and Andrea Scornaienchi had one assist each. Lafarge's Elaine Angelic and Pick Up Player, Lisa Venier each had one goal while assists to Trish Evans and Sandy Glibota.

Playoffs continue next Monday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre. Crawford's Canines take on Source for Sports at 7:00 p.m. Algoma Insurance and Investors Group meet at 8:00 p.m. and Lafarge and Play It Again will kick off the battle of the "Cellar Stars" at 9:00 p.m.
