Playing in memory of Colin Desmoulin (10 photos)

The inaugural Dezzy Cup pitted the St. Mary's Knights against the Soo Thunderbirds

It was standing room only as the St. Mary’s Knights faced off against the Soo Thunderbirds at the John Rhodes Arena Friday afternoon during the inaugural Dezzy Cup.

The two teams came together in memory of Colin Desmoulin, a St. Mary’s Knights hockey team member who tragically lost his life on Nov. 14 as the result of a collision on Highway 17.

“This means a lot. He’s basically a new-comer – we only moved here four years ago – and the amount of support from this community is overwhelming. It makes the dark days a little brighter to know he was so loved,” Colin’s mother Sandra told SooToday.

Admission to the game was $2 and donations to Breaking Away, a not-for-profit program for adults with developmental disabilities, were accepted at the door.

Colin volunteered his time to the organization, Sandra said.

“He loved the students. He saw the people as humans first and their disabilities second. It was important to him,” she said.
