Earlier this afternoon, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the cancellation of all OUA-sanctioned sports programming and championships up to Dec. 31, 2020 to best ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.

The decision made by the OUA Board of Governors reinforces the organization's commitment to mitigating potential health risks for student-athletes, coaches, administrators, officials, and fans as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

As noted by Dr. Mike DeGagné, chair of the OUA Board of Directors, “Unprecedented times require unprecedented action, which is what led us to this difficult decision.”

The decision follows ongoing conversations with public health authorities, as well as extensive contingency planning with the Board of Directors, member institutions, and other related organizations from across the country.

“Following the decision by the OUA, we will continue working to support our student-athletes and coaches through this difficult period. This includes supporting student athletes academically so they can have continued success with their studies, and continuing training following provincial safety directives for an eventual return to sport,” states Dave Trudelle, director of student experience at Algoma University. “We understand that this is a very challenging time and support the decisions that were made with the health and safety of everyone in mind. We look forward to the return of OUA sports competitions when it is safe to do so.”

Algoma University and Ontario University Athletics remain hopeful that student-athletes will be able to resume competition starting in the new year and as such, will be closely monitoring the ongoing health considerations and viability for these future opportunities over the coming months.

Algoma University currently competes in the following OUA sports; basketball, cross-country running, curling, Nordic skiing, soccer, and wrestling. Further information on the Thunderbirds Athletic program is available online.
