OHL Roundup: Whalers move into top spot in West Division

The Soo Greyhounds were off on Thursday night but a pair of teams they are battling with in the Ontario Hockey League standings were both in action as the Ontario Hockey League schedule continued.

In Windsor, Matthew Mistele and Vincent Trocheck had two goals and an assist each as the Plymouth Whalers beat the Windsor Spitfires 8-2. Zach Lorentz had a goal and two assists in the win for Plymouth. Former Greyhounds Gianluca Curcuruto set up three goals for Plymouth while Garrett Meurs had a goal and an assist in the win. Cody Payne also scored for the Whalers. Kerby Rychel and Alex Aleardi had a goal and an assist each in the loss for the Spitfires.

The win moves the Whalers into top spot in the OHL’s West Division, and into second in the Western Conference. The Whalers jump one point ahead of the Sarnia Sting and also moves them three points ahead of the Greyhounds in the standings.

The Greyhounds return to action on Friday night when they host the Windsor Spitfires. In a 7:07 start at the Essar Centre.

In St. Catharines, Ryan O’Connor scored on the power play 35 seconds into overtime to give the Barrie Colts a 2-1 win over the Niagara IceDogs. Steven Beyers added a goal and an assist in the win for the Colts. Goaltender Mathias Niederberger stopped 29 shots. Steven Shipley scored the lone goal for Niagara in the loss. Goaltender Chris Festarini stopped 31 shots.

In Ottawa, Bo Horvat scored twice and set up two more goals at the London Knights beat the Ottawa 67’s 11-1. Defenceman Dakota Mermis assisted on four goals in the win. Chris Tierney and Max Domi scored three times for the Knights. Seth Griffith (one goal, two assists) and Scott Harrington (three assists) also had three-point nights for London. Tyler Ferry and Josh Anderson had the other goals for London. Brett Gustavsen scored for Ottawa.

In Peterborough, Jonatan Tanus scored the shootout winner as the Peterborough Petes beat the Belleville Bulls 3-2. Brett Findlay and Derek Mathers scored in regulation for the Petes while Nick Ritchie also scored in the shootout. Petes goaltender Andrew D’Agostini stopped 32 shots. Bulls goaltender Charlie Graham stopped 44 shots in the loss. Brady Austin and Jake Cardwell scored for Belleville.
