OHL Roundup: West Division sees shift atop standings

Thursday night action saw three games on the schedule and all three featured West Division teams on the road. The Soo Greyhounds and Sarnia Sting were both in action as they battle for seeding in the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference.

The Soo Greyhounds and Sarnia Sting were both in action as they battle for seeding in the Ontario Hockey League’s Western Conference. The other Thursday night game saw the Windsor Spitfires look to keep pace as they battle to get into the OHL playoffs.

The Greyhounds jumped into top spot in the OHL’s West Division thanks to a 5-1 win over the Brampton Battalion. Ryan Sproul had three assists for the Greyhounds while Colin Miller (two goals), Brandon Alderson (one goal, one assist) and David Broll (two assists) also had multi-point nights for the Greyhounds. Sergey Tolchinsky had the other goal for the Greyhounds. Francis Menard had the lone goal for Peterborough.

In London, Anthony DeAngelo scored 33 seconds into overtime to give the Sarnia Sting a 4-3 win over the London Knights and pull the Sting into a tie with the Plymouth Whalers for second in the West Division. Nikolay Goldobin had a goal and two assists in the win. DeAngelo and Alex Basso added a goal and an assist each. Charles Sarault also scored. Daniel Nikandrov assisted on two goals for Sarnia. Olli Maatta and Seth Griffith had a goal and an assist each for London in the loss. Max Domi also scored for London.

In Peterborough, the line of Kerby Rychel, Alex Aleardi and Alexander Khokhlachev combined for 14 points as the Windsor Spitfires beat the Peterborough Petes 9-4. Rychel had a goal and five assists, Aleardi added five assists and Khokhlachev had three goals in the win. Ben Johnson had a goal and two assists for Windsor. Josh Ho-Sang added a goal and an assist. Adam Bateman, Remy Giftopoulos and Brady Vail also scored. Brett Findlay had a goal and an assist for Peterborough in the loss. Derek Mathers assisted on two goals. Nick Ritchie, Greg Betzold and Nick Czinder also scored for the Petes.
