OHL Roundup: Three weeks left in regular season

A busy day on the Ontario Hockey League schedule on Sunday saw eight games played, many with seeding implications in each conference.

In Brampton, Josh Leivo’s goal late in the second period held up as the winner as the Kitchener Rangers beat the Brampton Battalion 2-1. Max Iafrate had the other goal for the Rangers. Goaltender Joel Vienneau stopped 27 shots for the Rangers. Barclay Goodrow scored the lone goal for Brampton while goaltender Matej Machovsky stopped 29 shots in the loss.

In Erie, Sam Bennett had two goals and two assists as the Kingston Frontenacs doubled up the Erie Otters 6-3. Spencer Watson had two goals and an assist in the win. Henri Ikonen and Cody Alcock also scored for the Frontenacs. Connor McDavid had two assists for the Otters. Stephen Harper and J.P. Labardo scored the Otter goals.

In Guelph, Patrick Watling had a goal and two assists as the Guelph Storm beat the Sudbury Wolves 7-2. Jason Dickinson, Ryan Horvat and Scott Kosmachuk added a goal and an assist each in the win. Zac Leslie, Brody Milne and Cody McNaughton also scored for the Storm. Andrey Pedan picked up two assists for Guelph. Michael Kantor scored both goals for Sudbury.

In London, Alex Broadhurst had a goal and an assist as the London Knights beat the Saginaw Spirit 3-2. Broadhurst’s third period goal held up as the winner. Olli Maatta and Max Domi also scored for London. Garret Ross and Eric Locke had a goal and an assist each for Saginaw in the loss.

In Mississauga, Sergey Tolchinsky had three assists as the Soo Greyhounds used a pair of late goals to beat the Mississauga Steelheads 4-3. Andrew Fritsch chipped in with a goal and an assist in the win. Colin Miller and Ryan Kirkup also scored. Kirkup’s goal was the first of his OHL career. Goaltender Matt Murray stopped 28 shots for the Greyhounds. Kristoff Kontos scored a pair of goals for Mississauga. Defenceman Dylan DeMelo assisted on two goals. Lucas Venuto had the other goal for Mississauga.

In Ottawa, Malcolm Subban stopped 34 shots as the Belleville Bulls beat the Ottawa 67’s 6-3. Aaron Berisha, Alan Quine, Jordan Subban, Daniil Zharkov and Brady Austin had a goal and an assist each for the Bulls. Joseph Cramarossa set up a pair of goals. Tyler Graovac also scored for the Bulls. Sean Monahan had a pair of goals for the 67’s. Brett Gustavsen added a goal and an assist for Ottawa while Joseph Blandisi had a pair of assists.

In Windsor, Jaroslav Pavelka stopped 38 shots while Alex Aleardi had two goals and three assists as the Windsor Spitfires beat the Plymouth Whalers 6-5. Kerby Rychel added a goal and two assists in the win. Alexander Khokhlachev and Emerson Clark chipped in with a goal and an assist for Windsor. Tom Wilson scored a pair of goals for Plymouth in the loss. Rickard Rakell added a goal and an assist in the loss. Stefan Noesen and Mitchell Heard also scored.

In Oshawa, Scott Sabourin scored a pair of goals as the Oshawa Generals beat the Peterborough Petes 4-1. Matt Petgrave, Boone Jenner and Geoffrey Schemitsch added two assists each in the win. Tyler Biggs and Cole Cassels also scored for the Generals. Chase Hatcher had the lone goal for the Petes. Peterborough goaltender Michael Giugovaz had a busy night stopping 48 shots in the loss.
