OFSAA UPDATE: Braves, Eagles eliminated

The Bawating Braves season ended on a losing note but the defeat could not take away from the fabulous season the club experienced.

The Braves were eliminated from the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) boys AA basketball championships on Thursday in Perth after dropping their second consecutive tournament game.

Bawating fell to fifth-seeded Toronto Vaughan Road 65-35 on Thursday afternoon. D.J. Wright led the 11th seeded Braves with 13 points while Alex Johnson paced Vaughan Road with 19.

The Braves opened the tournament on Wednesday with a 65-34 loss to Ernestown as Wright and Kyle Gauthier scored nine points each.

The Braves advanced into the provincial championships after claiming the city championship and then winning the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) championships on Saturday at Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS).

*** EAGLES LANDED:

The Sir James Dunn Eagles fell in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at the OFSAA girls AAA volleyball championships in Newmarket.

The Eagles fell in two games to St. Michael 25-21, 25-22.

The league, city and NOSSA champion Eagles advanced into the quarterfinal round after finishing with a 2-1 record in their pool during round robin play on Wednesday.

Waterdown captured the provincial championship with a 3-2 win in the best-of-five final over McGregor.

*** WILDCATS CLAIM GOLD:

The Widdifield Wildcats from North Bay, who captured the NOSSA AA championship at White Pines on Saturday, captured the OFSAA gold medal at the AA championships in Goderich on Thursday.

Widdifield defeated Ashbury in three straight games for the championship.

Widdifield needed to defeated Sudbury's Lo-Ellen Park, the same team Wildcats beat for the NOSSA championship, in the semi-finals. Lo-Ellen went on to claim the bronze medal.
