NOSSA titles for local schools

The St. Mary's Knights girl's basketball teams claimed NOSSA titles locally while the Korah Colts are junior NOSSA champions

A pair of Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) titles were captured by local schools over the weekend.

Locally, the St. Mary’s Knights won a best-of-three series against Lockerby of Sudbury to win the AAA NOSSA title in senior girl’s action.

Emma Hendrie had nine points to pace the Knights to a 35-21 win in the decisive third game on Saturday evening. Serene Pulente added seven points for St. Mary’s. Josee Filion led Lockerby with six points.

St. Mary’s dropped the opener of the three-game series before winning in overtime in game two, forcing the third game.

In game two, Rachel Rising scored 14 points as the Knights won 35-33 in overtime. Jaclyn Groom had 10 points for Lockerby.

In the opener, Mia Filion and Alyssa Mcewn had seven points each as Lockerby picked up a narrow 32-29 win. Rising had 14 points while Pulente chipped in with eight points.

St. Mary’s will now compete in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament in Toronto that opens on Nov. 24.

The Knights junior team was declared NOSSA champs as the lone entry in the tournament.

In AA NOSSA action, the Korah Colts junior team won in North Bay beating the Widdifield Wildcats (North Bay) in the final.

The Colts senior team advanced to the AA NOSSA final before losing to MacDonald Cartier of Sudbury by a 46-43 margin. MacDonald Cartier will represent NOSSA at the AA OFSAA event in Windsor.
