Sault Ste. Marie's Nick Brash finished the 101-kilometre Courmayeur, Champex-Lac, Chamonix (CCC) division at Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc on Saturday in 21 hours, 22 minutes, 29 seconds.

"This was the hardest thing I've been through in my life," Brash told SooToday in a message Saturday.

The local runner finished 648th out of 2,146 racers, who tackled a gruelling mountain route that took them through Italy, Switzerland and France. Brash was the 10th Canadian to finish out of 20.

Brash, who started running three years ago after being diagnosed with diabetes, has maintained a gruelling training schedule over the past six months to compete in the CCC.
