Local biathletes compete against Ontario's best this weekend

Olympic-style competition is a qualifier for Team Ontario

The top male and female athletes aged 12 to 18 years representing their communities from across Ontario are here for the Regional Cadet Biathlon this weekend. They all have their sights set to participate in this Olympic-style competition, which consists of cross-country skiing 1-2 km loops through the challenging terrain of Sault Ste Marie and shooting .22-calibre rifles at falling-plate targets in the range stadium.

The 150 Sea, Army and Air Cadets will sight in their rifles on Saturday morning with the relay race starting at 12 a.m. at the Algoma Rod and Gun Club at 226 Connor Rd. They will return on Sunday to compete in a mass start individual race at 10:30 a.m., with medals being awarded in the afternoon to the top biathletes.

The best combined skiing time and shooting scores will determine who will make up Team Ontario and advance to the fourth stage of the Canadian Cadet Organization National Cadet Biathlon held in March.

The public is encourage to cheer on these biathletes to victory.
