Lakers pick up win, overtime loss at Michigan Tech

It was a good weekend for the Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team as the school returned to Western Collegiate Hockey Association play after an exhibition game last weekend.

The Lakers picked up a win and an overtime loss on the road against the Michigan Tech Huskies in weekend action.

On Friday night, Ashton Calder had a pair of goals for the Lakers in a 7-3 win.

Max Humitz and Brendan McKay had a goal and an assist each for Lake State.

Arvid Henrikson, Chase Gamelin, and Miroslav Mucha also scored for the Lakers while Yuki Miura assisted on a pair of goals.

Mareks Mitens made 39 saves for Lake State and also picked up an assist.

Colin Swoyer had a goal and an assist for Michigan Tech.

Trenton Bliss assisted on a pair of Huskies goals.

Alec Broetzman and Logan Pietila had the other Michigan Tech goals.

Huskies goaltender Matt Jurusik got the start but left the game after giving up two goals on nine shots. Blake Pietila stopped 16 shots the rest of the way.

On Saturday night, the Lakers dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Huskies to cap off the weekend.

Alex Smith had the overtime winner and finished the night with a goal and two assists.

Brian Halonen had two goals and an assist for Michigan Tech. Broetzman also had three points with a goal and two assists.

Huskies goaltender Robbie Beydoun stopped 39 shots.

Calder had a goal and two assists for the Lakers.

McKay and Pierre-Luc Veillette also scored.

Mittens made 26 saves.

The Lakers return to action next weekend with home games against Alabama-Huntsville, which includes a Saturday night game at the GFL Memorial Gardens.
