Lakers pick up key WCHA points

Facing Alaska Anchorage, Lake Superior State grabbed a win and a tie in weekend action

As the conference schedule continues, the Lake Superior State Lakers picked up some valuable points in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action this weekend.

Facing the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on home ice, the Lakers picked up a win and a tie in the weekend set between the two schools at Taffy Abel Arena.

On Friday night, Pierre-Luc Veillette was the hero as he broke a 2-2 tie with 1:03 to go in regulation time to give the Lakers a come-from-behind win.

The Lakers fell behind 2-0 in the opening period after Rylee St. Onge opened the scoring midway through the frame and Trey deGraaf converted a shorthanded just with just over five minutes to go in the period.

Lake State got on the board with 5:04 to go in the second period when senior forward Max Humitz scored from the left circle on the power play to cut the Alaska lead to one.

Freshman forward Louis Boudon tied the game for the Lakers with 3:28 to go in regulation time as he beat Alaska goaltender Kris Carlson from the right circle to set the stage for Veillette’s game-winner.

Humitz finished the night with a goal and an assist for Lake State while Jacob Nordqvist assisted on a pair of goals.

Lakers goaltender Mareks Mitens stopped 15 shots.

deGraaf had a goal and an assist for Alaska. Zach Court assisted on a pair of goals for the Seawolves.

Carlson made 25 saves.

On Saturday night, the two teams skated to a 3-3 with the Lakers picking up an extra point in the standings with a double-overtime goal off the stick of Veillette.

Hampus Eriksson and Ashton Calder had a goal and an assist for the Lakers in regulation time while Humitz had the other Lake State goal.

Mitens made 19 games.

Luc Brown had a pair of goals for Alaska. Brayden Camrud chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Alaska goaltender Brandon Perrone made 20 saves.

Lake State returns to action on Jan. 31as the team wraps up the month with an exhibition game on the road against the U.S. National Team Development Program’s Under-18 team in Plymouth, Mich.

The Lakers return to WCHA regular season action on Feb. 7 as the team begins a weekend series on the road against Michigan Tech.
