Lakers face nationally ranked opponent in weekend set

For the second time in three weeks, the Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team faced a notionally ranked non-conference opponent.

On the road facing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Lakers dropped a pair of games over the weekend.

On Friday night, the Lakers dropped a 5-2 decision in the weekend opener.

Cal Burke had a goal and three assists while Mike O'Leary had two goals and an assist for Notre Dame.

Cam Morrison assisted on a pair of goals for the Fighting Irish.

Graham Slaggert and Matt Hellickson also scored.

Goaltender Ryan Bischel made 24 saves.

Louis Boudon and Max Humitz scored for the Lakers.

Lake State goaltender Mareks Mitens made 27 saves.

On Saturday night, a pair of goals in the third period by O'Leary were the difference as Notre Dame completed the sweep with a 6-4 win.

O’Leary finished the night with two goals and an assist.

Burke and Spencer Stastney also had three-point nights with a goal and two assists each. Trevor Janicke and Jake Pivonka chipped in with a goal and an assist each.

Colin Theisen assisted on two goals for the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame goaltender Cale Morris made 29 saves.

Collin Saccoman had a pair of goals for Lake State.

William Riedell and Yuki Miura also scored for the Lakers.

Alexandro Ambrosio assisted on a pair of Lakers goals.

Goaltender Roman Bengert made 24 saves.

The Lakers begin Western Collegiate Hockey Association conference action next weekend at home against Ferris State with a pair of games beginning on Friday night at Taffy Abel Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m.
