Krezek named as new Sabercats skipper

The Sault Sabercats will have a new boss calling the shots on the sidelines this season.

Cale Krezek was named the team's new head coach on Monday as the club gets set to begin workouts for the upcoming Ontario Varsity Football League season, a league for 15-19 year-old players.

Former head coach Ross Viotto has stepped down from that role to concentrate on his position as the team governor and handle the administrative duties.

Viotto, who spearheaded the drive and worked feverishly to bring the highly regarded OVFL to Sault Ste. Marie, feels that concentrating his efforts off the field will benefit the club on the field.

Krezek has been with the Sabercats coaching staff since their inception and has spent the last two season's as defensive co-ordinator.

Also joining the coaching staff is Seth Cond, the head coach of the Bawating Braves and former Sault Steelers quarterback, as offensive co-ordinator, a role that Viotto also filled.

Jason Lalonde, a former Korah Colt and Steeler, has also joined the team as offensive line coach while Rose-Ann Ramsay, a dedicated volunteer in the local football community, will assist with the administrative duties.

The Sabercats will play the 2005 season in search of their first OVFL playoff spot. Last season, the Sabercats narrowly missed a post season berth with a 5-3 record.

The locals open the season on the road against the London Falcons, a perennial powerhouse run by Sault native Mike Esposito, on May 28.

After another tough road game in Windsor versus the Essex Ravens, the Sabercats play their home opener on June 11 against Sarnia's Lambton Lions at Rocky DiPietro Field.
