It was a much-needed victory for the St. Mary’s Knights.

As week three of the high school football season opened on Thursday night, St. Mary’s picked up its first victory of the season, beating White Pines 42-0 at Superior Heights in senior football action.

After seeing some progress from a young team in the opening two weeks, Thursday was an important game for the Knights.

“It was important for us to get a win,” said St. Mary’s Coach Jim Monico. “We were happy with the way we played.”

“We want to start showing people that we’re a pretty good team,” Monico also said. “We’re a pretty good team and we’ve got to start showing people that. Today we did what we have to do.”

Jake Ayotte had touchdown runs of five and eight yards and finished the day with 167 yards rushing on 13 carries. Carter Harrison (from 10 yards out), Nick Fowler (from one yard out), amd Thomas Cormier (also from one yard out) also had rushing touchdowns for the Knights.

Cody Tangl had the other Knights major, catching a six-yard pass from Fowler in the fourth quarter.

“We needed to get some touchdowns and do what we had to do,” Monico said. “We really wanted to get the shutout. Everything we wanted to do, we did.”

Defensively for the Knights, Michael Girardi had four tackles and a batted ball. Jordan Arruda had three tackles and a batted ball as well.

For the Knights, who improve to 1-2, the first three weeks have been about progress.

“We’re a young team and we’ve got to get guys in the right spots,” Monico said. “We’re starting to do that though. We’re getting better every week and that what we want.”

Receiver Mitch Dubreuil caught four passes for 43 yards for the Wolverines, who fall to 0-3 with the loss.

Defensively, Kolton Boissoneau had eight tackles, an assisted tackle and an interception for White Pines. Noah Tarni chipped in with five solo tackles and two assisted tackles.

“It was a gutsy effort from all 24 players,” White Pines Coach Marco Bernabucci said. “They worked hard from start to finish. I can’t complain about the effort. We’re progressing.”

Monico also credited the Wolverines.

“Hats off to White Pines,” Monico said. “They always play hard and they did again today.”

In Thursday’s junior game, St. Mary’s picked up a 45-6 win over the Wolverines to improve to 2-1 while the Wolverines fall to 0-3.

The high school football schedule continues on Friday night with a battle of the unbeaten teams at the senior level as the Korah Colts take on the Superior Heights Steelhawks. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Superior Heights. The junior game, also between the Colts (2-0) and Steelhawks (1-1), kicks off at 4:45 p.m.

St. Mary’s returns to action on Sept. 28 against Superior Heights while White Pines faces Korah the following night.
