Knights open high school hockey final with win

The league also announced its award winners

The city high school hockey final opened on Monday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre and it’s the St. Mary’s Knights who took the early lead.

]The regular season champs picked up a 5-1 win over the Korah Colts in the best-of-five series.

Aussie Rowe had three goals to pace the Knights offensively. Jonny Hammond added a goal and an assist while Daniel Mills assisted on a pair of St. Mary’s goals. Lucas Stefano also scored for St. Mary’s.

Tyler Albert had the lone goal for Korah.

The series resumes on Tuesday at the McMeeken.

Prior to the game, the league announced its award winners.

Travis Johnson and Josh Payeur of St. Mary’s had the best combined goals against. St. Mary’s was the league’s least penalized team. Jon Dyer of St. Mary’s was the most valuable defenceman, Isaac Lennox of Korah was the most gentlemanly player while also earning the league’s award for combining academic and on-ice performance. Austin Rowe was the league MVP in addition to leading the league in scoring. Nate Medaglia of St. Mary’s was the rookie of the year and Nick Keenan of Superior Heights earned the Matt Howard Memorial Award. The award goes annually to the graduating player who best exemplifies Howard’s passion for the game.
