Jacobs in good shape at provincials

Sault Ste. Marie’s Brad Jacobs and his team from the Community First Curling Centre is in good shape at the Northern Ontario Curling Association provincial championship in Little Current, Ont.

The Jacobs rink, which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden, will take a 4-0 record into the third day of action at the five-day event that will determine the northern Ontario rep at the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier in Regina.

Jacobs wrapped up action on Thursday night with a 7-6 win against Jordan Chandler of Sudbury.

After a single in the first and a steal of one in the second gave the Jacobs rink the lead, Chandler would take the lead with a single in the fourth and a steal of two in the fifth. Leading 6-4 through eight ends, the Jacobs rink gave up two in the ninth before scoring a single in the final end to pick up the victory.

The Jacobs rink opened action on Thursday with a 7-3 win in eight ends over Matt Dumontelle of the North Bay Granite Curling Club in the afternoon draw. 

Dumontelle scored a pair with the hammer in the opening end and led 3-2 through three ends before Jacobs would score a pair in the fourth end to take the lead. A steal of two more in the fifth and another in the seventh would seal the Jacobs victory.

Jacobs opened the tournament with a 6-4 win over Colin Koivula of the Fort William Curling Club in the opening draw of the tournament.

Trailing 3-2 through four ends, Jacobs would take the lead with a pair in the fifth end before a steal of one more in the seventh. The teams traded singles in the eighth and ninth ends.

In Wednesday’s evening draw, the Jacobs rink beat Charlie Robert, also of the Community First Curling Club, 8-2 in six ends. 

Leading 3-2 through four ends, Jacobs extended the lead with a pair in the fifth before sealing the win with a steal of three in the sixth end.

Jacobs returns to action on Friday afternoon against Sudbury’s Tanner Horgan in a battle of two remaining unbeaten teams in the field.. The team will then face Dylan Johnston of the Fort William Curling Club in Friday’s evening draw.

The Jacobs rink wraps up round robin action on Saturday morning against Dustin Montpellier of the Copper Cliff Curling Club in the morning draw.

Round robin action continues into Saturday with the championship set for Sunday afternoon. The top three teams in the round robin advance to the playoff round with the top team earning a spot in Sunday’s final.
