Jacobs falls in Champions Cup tie-breaker

The Grand Slam of Curling schedule came to an end for Sault Ste. Marie’s Brad Jacobs and his team from the Community First Curling Centre on Saturday.

The Jacobs rink dropped a 4-3 decision to Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaugson in a tie-breaker game Saturday morning at the Champions Cup in Calgary.

Tied at three in the final end, Gunnlaugson scored a single with the hammer to pick up the win and advance to the playoff round.

The Jacobs rink, which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden, erased a 3-1 Gunnlaugson lead after scoring a single in the fifth end before a steal of one in the sixth end.

Jacobs got into the tie-breaker after posting a 2-2 record through round robin action.

The Jacobs rink opened the event with a 5-3 loss to Greg Persinger of Seattle in the second draw. Jacobs led 3-2 through five ends before Persinger took the lead with a single in the sixth before steals of one each in the seventh and eighth ends to pick up the win.

The Jacobs rink would rebound with a 10-5 win over Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers in the fourth draw. Trailing 2-1 through three ends, Jacobs would score five in the third to take the lead. Carruthers would get two back in the fourth before the teams traded singles in the fifth and sixth ends. Jacobs would seal the win with three in the seventh end.

In the eighth draw, Jacobs dropped a 5-4 decision to Brad Gushue of St. John’s Nfld. Gushue led 4-2 through five ends before Jacobs would tie the game thanks to a single in the sixth and a steal of one in the seventh. Gushue would score one with the hammer in the eighth to pick up the win.

Jacobs wrapped up the round robin with a 9-0 win over Tyler Tardi of Langley, BC in the final round robin draw on Friday night. After blanking the opening end, Jacobs took the lead with a single in the second. Jacobs would proceed to pick of steals of two in the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth to pick up the win.
