HOCKEY NOTES: North Stars tie; Ice Breaker Cup opens

The Soo North Stars opened the Big Nickel Tournament in Sudbury on Thursday night with a tie. The locals skated to a 2-2 draw with Markham as Jake McClelland and Zac Torquato scored the North Stars goals.

The North Stars, the Sault's AAA Midget hockey team, will hit the ice again on Friday night against the Gloucester Rangers.

The North Stars return to Great North Midget League action next weekend with a pair of games against the North Bay Trappers at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

*** ICE BREAKER CUP:

The annual Ice Breakers Cup women's hockey tournament begins on Friday in Sault Ste. Marie.

Action in the pee wee, intermediate, midget and senior divisions continue through the weekend with games scheduled for the John Rhodes Community Centre, Rankin Arena and McMeeken Centre.

The championship games are scheduled for Sunday at the Rhodes. The pee wee final begins at 10 a.m. on pad one followed by the intermediate final at 11:30 a.m. On pad two, the midget final begins at 10:15 a.m. followed by the senior championship at 11:45 a.m.
