Hockey Notebook: Thunderbirds and Greyhounds pick up wins

The Soo Thunderbirds rebounded from a Saturday night loss while the Soo Greyhounds swept Sudbury at home

After dropping a pair of games on home ice, the Soo Thunderbirds rebounded on Sunday afternoon on the road.

A three-point performance from Zach Senecal helped the Thunderbirds to a 4-2 win over the Espanola Express Sunday afternoon at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.

Senecal scored a pair of goals and assisted on another for the Thunderbirds, who improved to 29-11-1-0 with the win.

Austin Kozluk and Matthew Caruso also scored for the Thunderbirds. Keegan Stevenson assisted on a pair of goals.

Goaltender Dougie Newhouse stopped 24 shots for the Thunderbirds.

Espanola goaltender Logan Sawka stopped 34 shots.

MacKenzie Aiken and Cameron Anklewich scored for the Express.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Jan. 22 in Chelmsford against the Rayside Balfour Canadians.

AAA Midget Greyhounds sweep at home

The Soo Greyhounds Great North Midget League team hosted the Sudbury Minor Midget Wolves over the weekend and picked up three victories.

On Friday night, Lucas Theriault had three goals and an assist as the Greyhounds opened the weekend with a 10-1 victory.

Noah Boman had a goal and three assists while Parker Morgan added a pair of goals. Owen Shier, Bradon Caruso, Dale Armstrong and Nik Gervasi also scored. Jesse Soltys, Kelly Quevillion, Nolan Ford and Camaryn Baber assisted on two goals each.

Jarod Hurley had the lone Sudbury goal.

On Saturday, Caleb Wood scored four times as the Greyhounds beat the Wolves 13-3.

Baber added three goals and two assists while Shier had a goal and three assists. Theriault had two goals and an assist. Caruso rounded out the scoring with a goal and two assists.

Brett McGlade, Sebastien Olivier and James Way scored for Sudbury.

On Sunday, Baber had three goals and three assists in a 9-2 Greyhounds win.

Theriault chipped in with two goals and three assists while Wood and Tristan Cicchello had a goal and an assist each. Gervasi and Steven Bellini also scored. Boman assisted on four Greyhounds goals while Caruso assisted on three.

Dryden Rivet had a goal and an assist while McGlade also scored for the Wolves in the loss.

The Greyhounds return to action on Jan. 28 against the New Liskeard Cubs. Puck drop at the John Rhodes Community Centre is set for 7 p.m.
