Hockey Notebook: Midget Greyhounds take two of three, Lakers split

The Soo Greyhounds AAA midget team won a pair of games on the road while the Lake Superior State Lakers split conference action against Northern Michigan

The weekend saw the Great North Midget League’s Soo Greyhounds in action for three games on the road.

The weekend started well but the Greyhounds finished the weekend on a tough note with a 4-1 loss in North Bay against the GNML-leading Trappers.

Mason McMahon, Bailey Chenier and Matt Hardwick had a goal and an assist each for the Trappers. Eric Mondoux and Jake Gravelle assisted on two goals each. Ian Denomme also scored for North Bay.

Goaltender Ryan Cook made 27 saves for the Greyhounds while Camaryn Baber had the lone goal.

On Saturday night, Lucas Theriault had three goals and two assists to pace the Greyhounds to a 9-4 win over the Timmins Majors. Noah Boman and Caleb Wood added a pair of goals. Tristan Cicchello and Parker Morgan chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Nik Gervasi assisted on a pair of goals. Garrett Boyonoski picked up the win in goal.

Frederic Leclair-Pouw had two goals and an assist while Evan Kentisch-Stack and Linden Spencer had a goal and an assist each for Timmins. Cameron Chisolm assisted on three goals.

In the trip opener on Friday night, Baber paced the Greyhounds with a goal and an assist as the Greyhounds beat the Sudbury Minor Midget Wolves 5-1. Boman and Bradon Caruso assisted on two goals each. Gervasi, Cicchello, Theriault and Owen Shier also scored for the Greyhounds. Cook picked up the win in goal, making 35 saves.

Joe Mazur had the lone goal for Sudbury.

The Greyhounds return to action on Jan. 13, in the opener of a three-game weekend series against Sudbury. All three games are set for the John Rhodes Community Centre. Friday’s game begins at 8 p.m. while puck drop on Saturday is set for 7 p.m. and the teams wrap up the weekend set on Sunday at 1 p.m.

LAKERS SPLIT HOME-AND-HOME SET

A return to conference action saw the Lake Superior State Lakers hockey team split a pair of games against Northern Michigan in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action over the weekend in a home-and-home series between the two schools.

On Saturday night, Dominik Shine scored three times as Northern Michigan skated to a 6-4 win over the Lakers. Zach Diamantoni chipped in with a pair of goals. Troy Loggins also scored for the Wildcats. Darien Craighead, Robbie Payne, Gerard Hanson and Brock Maschmeyer assisted on two goals each for Northern Michigan.

Max Humitz had two goals and an assist while J.T. Henke had a goal and two assists for the Lakers in Saturday’s loss. Anthony Nellis assisted on three Laker goals. Diego Cuglietta also scored.

On Friday night, the Lakers used a pair of second period goals to beat the Wildcats 3-2. Nellis scored a pair of goals while Cuglietta also scored for the Lakers. Henke assisted on a pair of goals for Lake State.

Shine and Brock Maschmerer scored for Northern Michigan in Friday’s loss.

The two teams return to action next weekend with another home-and-home set to end the season series between the schools. The Lakers will travel to Marquette on Friday before hosting Northern Michigan on Saturday night.
