High school sports roundup: Busy stretch for four sports

It's a busy stretch for high school sports locally as the winter sports wind down

It’s a busy time for high school sports.

Wednesday saw the city wrestling championships at Superior Heights in advance of the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) championship on Feb. 19.

Superior Heights won its third consecutive team title on the boys side with six individual winners. St. Mary’s placed second as a team.

St. Mary’s won the girls team title with Korah finishing second and Superior Heights third.

Boys Individual Champions

  • 54 kg: Elliot Dawson – Superior Heights
  • 58 kg: Gilles Wardell – Superior Heights
  • 61 kg: Darius Wilson – Superior Heights
  • 64 kg: Jerryd Mcleod – White Pines
  • 67.5 kg: Maverick Robinson – Superior Heights
  • 72 kg: Brandon Rowe – St Mary’s
  • 77 kg: Miisheen Shawanda – White Pines
  • 83 kg: Jonah Hult – Superior Heights
  • 95 kg: Riley Miller – St. Mary’s
  • 130 kg: Brendan Willet – Superior Heights

Girls Individual Champions

  • 44 kg: Star Harmon – St. Mary’s
  • 47.5 kg: Emily Duchesne – Korah
  • 51 kg: Teyah Schofield – Superior Heights
  • 54 kg: Sarah Caswell – St. Mary’s
  • 57.5 kg: Anjolene Pine – Korah
  • 61 kg: Skyler Perron – Korah
  • 64 kg: Ashley Campionni – St Mary’s
  • 67.5 kg: Lettie Bumbacco – Superior Heights
  • 72 kg: Rachel Winchester – Superior Heights
  • 77 kg: Rebekah Trudel – Superior Heights

The NOSSA championships will be hosted by St. Mary’s with the OFSAA championship set for Windsor later this month.

In boys high school basketball, the annual Guy Vetrie Invitational got underway on Thursday night with games at both the junior and senior levels.

Round robin action continues on Friday with games scheduled for Korah, White Pines, Superior Heights and St. Mary’s.

All four local schools are in action in the tournament.

The senior tournament also features 11 schools from out of town including Stillwater Prep of North Carolina.

The tournament championships are set for Saturday night at Korah.

Tipoff for the junior final is at 6 p.m. with the senior game scheduled for 8 p.m.

Girls high school volleyball action continued on Thursday night as both St. Mary’s and Korah swept their respective opponents.

In junior action, St. Mary’s beat Notre Dame du Sault in straight sets 25-18 and 25-22 while the Knights senior team beat Notre Dame in three sets.

Korah’s juniors and seniors each beat White Pines in straight sets.

High school hockey playoff action opened this week with a pair of games.

On Wednesday, Austin Rowe, Marcus Sacchetta and Lucas Stefano had two goals each as St. Mary’s blanked CASS 10-0.

Michael Trunzo, Matt Keenan, Carmen Scarfone and Lucas Miller also scored for the Knights while goaltender Zach Flesher got the shutout.

The series continues on Feb. 17 at the McMeeken in a 3:30 start.

On Thursday, Superior Heights scored a pair of goals in the third period to force overtime before Matt MacGregor scored the game-winner in the extra period to give the Steelhawks a 3-2 win over Korah.

Brandon Dewar and Justin Garton also scored for Superior Heights while Noah Naccarato and Noah Sehovic scored for Korah in regulation time.

Game two of the series is set for Feb. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
