HIGH SCHOOL NOTES: Knights and Eagles to clash in city final

In a playoff double header held at a muddy and wet Rocky DiPietro Field on Saturday afternoon, the Knights cruised to a 33-12 win over the Bawating Braves and the Eagles squeaked out a wild affair 14-7 over the Korah Colts.

The Knights and Eagles will now meet in Friday's High School Football League city championship game slated for Rocky DiPietro Field at 7:30 p.m.

In the opening game on Saturday, quarterback Anthony Amadio tossed three touchdown passes to lead the Knights past the Braves.

Amadio completed his first three passes for touchdowns to Kyle Dugas, who later added a two point convert, for 15 yards, Phil Ruicci for 47 yards and Andrew Posteraro for 54 yards. Dan Esson added a touchdown on an eight yard run to give the Knights a 25-0 half time lead.

Andrew Hatten scored a third quarter touchdown for the Braves before Kayvon Fatemazadeh scampered six yards for a touchdown for the Knights. On the game's final play, Bawating receiver Kyle Gauthier took a reverse and then optioned a pass down field to brother Matt Gauthier for a 42 yard touchdown.

Fatemazadeh led all rushers with 147 yards on 14 carries. Mark Thorburn led the Knights defense with eight tackles while Aaron Amadio made six tackles and Dave Ouellet five. Marc Palumbo and Joey Thorburn each made an interception.

Brad Radbourne led the Bawating attack with 51 yards rushing on 11 carries. Matt Gauthier led the Braves defense with 7.5 tackles and an interception while Kyle Gauthier added four tackles.

In the second semi-final, the Eagles and Colts engaged in a defense struggle which saw very few scoring opportunities.

The Eagles took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter when quarterback Frank Weise connected with Tyler Robinson for a 14 yard touchdown. Korah's Jon Day tied the game at 7-7 in the second quarter on a three yard touchdown run.

Dan Kennedy scored the game winning touchdown for the Eagles on a 21 yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Korah had several opportunities to drive late in the game but were stalled each time by a tough Eagles defense.

Nigel Milne led the Eagles rushers with 71 yards on 20 carries while Kennedy added 70 yards on 14 carries. Defensively for the Eagles, Kennedy recorded 6.5 tackles while D.J. Idehen added 4.5 tackles and Adam Elliot made four tackles and a sack.

Pat Koski led the Colts with 68 yards running on 11 caries. Day was held to 36 yards on 19 carries. Adam Day led the Colts defense with nine tackles while Ryan Mallette, Kevin McLeod and Matt Parker recorded five tackles each. Jordan Morin made four tackles, an interception and recovered a fumble.

*** JUNIOR FOOTBALL:

Semi-fianl action will be held at the Queen Elizabeth B Field on Sunday. First place St. Mary's will host Korah at 12 p.m. followed by second place St. Basil and White Pines at 2 p.m. The winners will meet in next Saturday's city championship at 1 p.m. at Rocky DiPietro Field.

*** BASKETBALL:

The Korah Colts defeated the Central Algoma Secondary School Huskies 61 -23 to win the Senior Lady Husky Invitational Basketball Tournament at CASS in Desbarats on Saturday.

Stephanie Marcinkovich with 14 points and Liza Turpin with 11 points lead the Colts while Helen Alloi had 6 points for the Huskies.

The Huskies earned a berth in the final with a 40 -29 victory over the Elliot Lake Atoms. Alloi with 14 points and Ashton Ramsay with 12 lead CASS while Sarah Moor had 10 points for the Atoms.

In the junior championship, the Bawating Braves defeated Elliot Lake 42 - 36. Amanda Whitmell lead all scorers with 17 points for the Braves while Katerina Whitehead had 13 points for Elliot Lake.

In the third place Junior Game- CASS defeated Michipicoten 28 -27. Amanda Hollingsworth had eight points for CASS while Heather Parisse had 13 points for the Vikings.
