Greyhounds beat Sting, move up in standings (Updated)

With the Plymouth Whalers pulling away atop the Ontario Hockey League’s West Division, second place is still up for grabs with 11 games remaining in the regular season.

The Soo Greyhounds moved into second on Thursday night after a 6-3 win over the Sarnia Sting in Sarnia. With the win, the Greyhounds now sit a point ahead of the Sting in the West Division and sixth in the Western Conference.

The win was the second for the Greyhounds over the Sting in just over a week after the Greyhounds beat Sarnia 8-0 at the Essar Centre last Wednesday night.

Nick Cousins led the way for the Greyhounds in Thursday’s win with three goals and an assist. The four-point night gives the Philadelphia Flyers prospect 97 points and a seven-point lead over Sarnia’s Charles Sarault in the OHL scoring race.

Defenceman Ryan Sproul added a goal and an assist in the win. Sproul currently has a seven-point lead over Owen Sound’s Cody Ceci atop the OHL’s scoring leaders for defencemen.

Colin Miller and Brandon Alderson chipped in with a pair of assists for the Greyhounds in the win. Trent Mallette and Sergey Tolchinsky also scored in the win for the Greyhounds. Goaltender Justin Nichols got the start for the Greyhounds but left the game following one period after stopping seven of eight shots. Matt Murray stopped 13 of 15 shots in the final two periods.

Reid Boucher scored a pair of goals for the Sting in the loss. The two-goal performance gives the forward 53 on the season. Craig Duininck had the other goal for Sarnia. Anthony DeAngelo had two assists for Sarnia. JP Anderson stopped 39 shots for the Sting.

The Greyhounds now prepare to face the London Knights on Friday night as they continue their three-game road trip.
