SUDBURY, Ont. – Capitalizing on opportunities and battling back are two things the Soo Greyhounds have become good at and they did both on Sunday in the final game of a three-game road trip.

Trailing by a pair of goals early, the Greyhounds scored seven times on 27 shots in a 7-4 Ontario Hockey League win over the Sudbury Wolves at Sudbury Arena.

“It was a real tough test for us,” said Greyhounds Coach John Dean. “They jumped on our bus legs in the first period really well. They took us to task a little bit but I really liked the response of our bench.”

After a four-point performance on Saturday night in Barrie, Morgan Frost scored five times on Sunday, giving the veteran forward 30 goals in 38 games and moving him into third in the OHL scoring race.

“Morgan Frost over the last seven or eight games has really put the team on his back,” Dean said. “He’s been exceptional. The biggest thing for me is the intangibles he’s bringing as a leader. The way he’s carrying the bench and dictating the emotion on the bench in a positive way and the way he’s calming the young guys down.

“He’s done an incredible job growing as a leader this year,” Dean added.

After a slow start to the contest, the Greyhounds got a goal from Frost with 6.2 seconds to go in the opening period to cut Sudbury’s lead to one and then Zack Trott deposited a chance behind Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen early on in the second period to tie the game.

“Frosty getting that goal really calmed us down,” Dean said.

Mac Hollowell, Keeghan Howdeshell, Jaden Peca, and Barrett Hayton assisted on two goals each for the Greyhounds.

Joe Carroll also scored for the Greyhounds.

Goaltender Matthew Villalta stopped 33 shots.

Darian Pilon has a goal and an assist for the Wolves while MacAuley Carson and Peter Stratis assisted on two goals each for Sudbury.

Jack Thompson, Quinton Byfield, and Blake Murray also scored for Sudbury.

Luukkonen stopped 19 shots for Sudbury.

The Greyhounds lost Jaromir Pytlik in the second period after the import forward was handed a major penalty for checking from behind following a hit on Adam Ruzicka of Sudbury.

Ruzicka was injured on the play but stayed in the game.

The Wolves lost veteran forward David Levin late in the second period to a match penalty after the veteran forward cross-checked Greyhounds overage defenceman Jordan Sambrook.

After being injured on Saturday night in the third period of the Greyhounds win over Barrie, Cole MacKay missed Sunday’s game with an upper-body injury.

Roman Pucek also missed Sunday’s game with a lower body injury.

Dean said both MacKay and Pucek are day-to-day and could be available for the Greyhounds upcoming homestand.

With a three-win trip, the Greyhounds take a 30-10-4-1 record into action on home ice next weekend. The Greyhounds open a short two-game homestand on Saturday night against the Peterborough Petes.

Sudbury, in a battle for positioning in the OHL’s Eastern Conference, falls to 25-16-2-3.

In other action around the OHL on Sunday, in Guelph, Akil Thomas has two goals and an assist as the Niagara IceDogs beat the Guelph Storm 4-3. Niagara goaltender Stephen Dhillon made 49 saves.

In Kingston, Jake Gravelle had a goal and an assist as the Hamilton Bulldogs beat the Kingston Frontenacs 3-1. Jan Jenik assisted on a pair of goals for Hamilton.

In Kitchener, Greg Meireles had three goals and an assist as the Kitchener Rangers beat the Owen Sound Attack 5-3. Riley Damiani assisted on three goals for the Rangers. Jonathan Yantsis and Rickard Hugg had a goal and an assist for Kitchener.

In Mississauga, Thomas Harley’s power play goal in the third period was the game-winner as the Mississauga Steelheads beat the Sarnia Sting 3-2. Cole Carter has a goal and an assist for Mississauga.

In North Bay, Brandon Coe had the overtime winner as the North Bay Battalion beat the London Knights 4-3. North Bay goaltender Christian Propp made 37 saves.

In Saginaw, Ivan Prosvetov made 44 saves as the Saginaw Spirit beat the Windsor Spitfires 4-1. Blade Jenkins and Cole Perfetti has a goal and an assist each for Saginaw.
