He’s currently a member of the St. Mary’s Knights senior football team and spent the summer as a member of the Ontario Football Conference’s Sault Sabercats, but you would be surprised to learn that Carter Harrison might surprise you with one of the non-traditional sports he’s into.

In SooToday’s latest Q&A installment, we sat down with Harrison to get his thoughts on a wide variety of subjects, including a sport you would be surprised to learn that he’s interested in.

Q: What is your first sports memory?

A: My first sports memory was playing soccer, I kicked the ball to my goalie, he wasn’t paying attention and it went into the back of the net. That was the goal that won the game for the other team.

Q: What other sports are you interested in that people wouldn’t expect?

A: I’m interested in croquet. It’s a timed sport and you’ve got to have patience for it. I’m used to fast-paced sports, so it’s easier to play something that can take your mind off things and play with a couple of friends.

Q: Who are three people, dead or alive, that you would like to have dinner with and why?

A: I have to invite Beethoven for the musical entertainment. Muhammad Ali because he would be an interesting person to have a conversation with and probably John Lennon. He’s a laid-back kind of guy with his music so I’m sure that transitions into his personality.

Q: What non-sports career are you interested in and why?

A: Psychology because I’m very good with talking to people. It comes natural to me and I feel like people are comfortable talking to me so it would be a good career choice.

Q: What person, living or dead, do you admire most and why?

A: Martin Luther King. Just the way he expressed himself through civil rights. It’s powerful.

Q: If you could be the commissioner for a day, what changes would you make to the sport?

A: I would probably find some referees that could actually ref the games.

Q: What’s the most important life lesson you’ve learned?

A: Not to judge anyone just by what you see. Someone could be upset or feel bad about themselves and you could say one thing that could ruin their whole day or you could say one thing that and it could make their whole day. You can never be too sure.

Q: What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

A: When I’m on the football field, I sing songs. I like to sing on the field. It’s not to calm nerves, it’s just for pure amusement. I find it amusing just to break out into song.

Q: If you could have any super power, what would it be?

A: Invisibility, just so I could go around and get some of the guys who have pranked me.

Q: If you were stranded on an island, what three things would you bring with you?

A: Obviously food. I can’t go a day without eating anything. I would probably bring some form of entertainment because I would be bored. Knowing me, I would probably go swimming and then think ‘I’m tired of this, I’ve got to do something else.’ And I would probably bring some form of companionship. Someone to be there to have a conversation with. Just someone to talk to and keep me company.
