The Algoma wrestlers are returning to Sault Ste. Marie today with a collection of hardware after four student-athletes medaled at the OUA Wrestling Championships in St. Catharines, Ontario. Natasha Doroodian, Bryce Davis, Broderick Collison, and Riley Tubaro podiumed at the provincial competition yesterday.

Having medaled at the provincial level, Doroodian, Davis, Collison, and Tubaro will now compete at the national competition, the U Sports Wrestling Championship, being held at the George Leach Centre from Feb. 23 – 24.

"The coaching staff at Algoma University couldn't be more proud of these young Thunderbirds,” said Head Coach Trevor Manchester. “This team has continued to get better and better as the year progressed. Having four wrestlers qualify for the U Sports Championships is a huge accomplishment, and will have a large impact on the development and continued growth of our program."

Local student-athlete Natasha Doroodian earned her second OUA silver medal for the Thunderbirds. Competing in the women’s 63-kilogram class, Doroodian fell to Jessica Brouillette of Brock University in the gold medal match. She went 3-1 on the mats.

"I feel really good about my results today. Not competing for the last couple of seasons has really let me realize how much love I have for this sport and how much I missed the competition. Having two knee surgeries in the past two seasons set me back in my development, but I am excited for competing in front of a home crowd in two weeks,” said Doroodian.

Collison earned a silver medal in the men’s 54-kilogram. From Windsor, Ontario, Collison went 3-1 on the mats, losing his only match to Vidran Thanarajah of McMaster University.

"Taking home the first OUA men's medal in the history of Algoma University is an accomplishment that I am very proud of. The help and support from the athletes competing, and not competing, has helped to push me to where I ended up. Good support overall and a positive attitude were also a major factor,” said Collison.

Davis also earned a silver medal for the Thunderbirds. From Fenton, Michigan, Davis went 2-1 on the mats, falling only to gold medalist Matt Jagas of Brock University.

"I think that I have made big strides from where I was one year ago. Technically, I am a much smarter wrestler. I am ready to finish this season off strong at Algoma and continue training hard this offseason,” said Davis.

Rounding out the medaling student-athletes for Algoma is first-year student-athlete Riley Tubaro. Tubaro earned a bronze medal in the women’s 51-kilogram. From Windsor, Ontario, Tubaro finished 3-1 on the mats, winning her bronze medal match over Rachel Cowey of the University of Guelph.

"I am happy with my performance as a first year, especially meeting my goal of qualifying for the USports National Championships.  I am extremely thankful for the support system of my teammates and coaches. I am really excited for the future of our small, but growing team.  I think that our results today showed that we can compete with the other programs across the OUA."

Also competing for the Thunderbirds were Skyler Perron, Noodin Shawanda, Jordan Campioni, and Stephen Kreyenbuhl. Perron earned 6th in the women’s 59-kilogram. Shawanda earned 6th in the men’s 61-kilogram, Campioni earned 6th in the men’s 82-kilogram, and Kreyenbuhl earned fourth in the men’s 100-kilogram.
