Former Soo Greyhounds goaltender Ray Emery died on Sunday morning.

Authorities have confirmed that Emery drowned early Sunday morning while swimming with friends near the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club around 6 a.m.

He was 35.

Police Inspector Marty Schulenberg told The Hamilton Spectator. “They went out for a swim and unfortunately he did not emerge after diving in. We responded along with Hamilton Fire and EMS. Unfortunately, our efforts on the water and in the area just around the piers were met with negative results.”

Emery spent three seasons with the Greyhounds from 1999 to 2002.

Former Greyhounds General Manager Kyle Dubas, who worked with the team during Emery’s time with the organization tweeted Sunday “to see the news of his passing this afternoon is equally sudden and shocking.”

“Ray’s smile and intelligence made him a magnetic personality,” the statement continued. “You always rooted for him to reach his vast potential even as he went through the many ups and downs of his playing career. My deepest condolences to his family and friends for their loss. He will be missed.”

Emery was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the fourth round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and played in 287 career games with the Senators, Philadelphia Flyers. Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks. He won a Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in the 2012-13 season.
