Eagles take series lead

After dropping the series opener in overtime, the Soo (Mich.) Eagles have taken a 2-1 series lead over the Soo Thunderbirds in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League playoff action.

The Eagles took the series lead thanks to a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night at Pullar Stadium in the Michigan Sault.

Gianni Vitaliès goal 2:25 into the contest was the eventual game-winner for the Eagles while goaltender Carter McPhail made 30 saves for the shutout.

Austin Rowe had a goal and two assists to pace the Eagles offensively. Brendan Blair had the other goal for the Eagles.

Brandon Gordon got the start for the Thunderbirds and stopped 24 of 27 shots before making way for Eric Schuch, who stopped both shots he faced late in the contest in relief.

Game four is Friday night back at Pullar Stadium with game five the following night at the John Rhodes Community Centre on the Canadian side of the St. Marys River. Puck drop for both games is set for 7:30 p.m.
