Fast starts have the Korah Colts sitting at 3-0 in senior girl’s high school basketball action.

Thanks to a 10-0 run to start the game and a 22-point performance from Tori Ivey, the Colts picked up a 46-27 win over St. Mary’s on Wednesday night at St. Mary’s.

“We’ve been very good first halves and again today it was excellent,” said Korah Coach Gary Cormier. “We had a great defensive effort from everybody in the first half. We shot the ball reasonably well and our pressure got them out of their offense a little bit.”

Grace Koski added seven points for the Colts.

For the Knights, the slot start was something they couldn’t recover from.

“Hopefully you get some lucky bounces and some breaks where they miss some shots,” Knights Coach Dave Zagordo said. “They’re going to pressure you. They’re going to shoot some three’s and move the ball up the court. It’s expected. They’re a good team. You just have to be ready off the start and if you’re not (you fall behind). We were down 10-0 early so it’s tough to get into a hole like that and come back.”

Emma Hendrie led St. Mary’s with seven points.

Cormier noted just how good the Colts have been early on in games early in the regular season.

“Our girls this year have done a really good job coming out of the gates in the first two or three minutes of the game,” Cormier said. “Sometimes you hit shots and sometimes you don’t but even if you don’t, our defence is keeping us in games and close.”

Cormier also spoke of just how good Ivey has been. He credited her ability to make those around her better.

“She’s leading our team and doing a lot of good things,” Cormier said of the Colts veteran. “She’s scoring. She’s playing defence. She’s sharing the ball and she’s making everyone around her better.”

Zagordo echoed Cormier’s comments on Ivey, speaking to how dangerous she is on the court.

“She creates so much for them,” Zagordo said. “She did a great job and we just weren’t ready to play against her. She’s very tenacious and an outstanding player.”

St. Mary’s won the junior game on Wednesday by a 42-38 margin. Alyssa Rizzo led St. Mary’s with 14 points while Jalen Gagnon added seven.

Korah’s Cassandra Carlson led all scorers in the junior game with 17 points.

Both teams were in action on Tuesday night as well.

Serena Pulente had nine points and Taryn Lamorie chipped in with seven as the Knights beat Superior Heights 42-18. Carlyle Richards had five points and Alicia Wellings had four points for the Steelhawks.

An 18-point performance from Ivey helped Korah to a 46-29 win over White Pines on Tuesday. Jaden Pettenuzzo added nine points for the Colts. Darby Sewell and Riley Dunbar had seven points each for White Pines.

In Tuesday’s junior action, Skylar Toms had 12 points as Korah beat White Pines 55-10. Rain Brock had four points for White Pines.

Victoria Duhnam had seven points while Paige Baton added six points as St. Mary’s picked up a narrow 29-26 win over Superior Heights. Brayden Corbett-Lewis had eight points for Superior Heights. Lilley Cornacchia chipped in with seven points for the Steelhawks.

Action continues in the girl’s high school basketball league on Thursday as Superior Heights hosts White Pines. Junior action tips off at 5:15 and the senior game is set for 7 p.m.
