The defending senior high school football champions opened the 2018 season on a high on Thursday night with a lopsided victory.

The Korah Colts picked up a 64-0 win over the White Pines Wolverines Thursday at Superior Heights in the opening game of the high school football season.

Colts Coach Tom Annett said the message following Thursday’s win is about getting back to work.

“We’ve got to get to work,” Annett said. “We’ve got a matchup that we’re really excited about against St. Mary’s next week. They’re very strong this year. We’ve got to get a lot better. I know the score was lopsided but we did make quite a few mistakes. There was a lot of hesitation. We’ve got to clean some things up.”

For the Wolverines, it’s about getting better going forward this season.

“I’m happy with how the week ended because we were able to field a team,” said White Pines Coach Jonathan Bujold. “It took a lot of work to get there.

“So many guys on our team are so raw,” Bujold added. “It’s a learning season. We’re planning on getting better every week.”

Korah got on the board early as Nik Gervasi ran the ball in from 34 yards out to make it 7-0 just over two minutes into the contest.

Midway through the opening quarter, White Pines would concede a safety to make the score 9-0.

Gervasi would punch the ball in from four yards out just under two minutes later as the Colts took a 16-0 lead.

Korah took a 23-0 lead after Cameron Andreychuk recovered a White Pines fumble in the endzone with 4:22 to go in the quarter.

Tyler Brechin would catch a pass from Jordan Robinson-Wright from 61 yards out to make it 30-0 Colts 2:07 into the second quarter.

Just under four minutes into the second quarter Blake Newman ran the ball in from 25 yards out to make it 36-0.

In the final minute of the second quarter, Korah’s Tristan O’Flynn ran the ball in from seven yards out to make the score 43-0 going into the half.

Zack Politano would make it 50-0 on a touchdown run midway through the third quarter.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Jackson Martin caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Titus Martynuck to make it 57-0.

With just under five minutes to go in the game, Mitchell Dewar ran the ball in from 12-yards out to make it 64-0.

“Hats off to their team,” Annett said. “Their numbers are low and they’re in a rebuild right now. I give them a lot of credit for coming out and showing a lot of toughness despite the low numbers. They played really hard.”

Brechin finished the day with 100 yards receiving on two catches. Dear had 69 yards rushing on three carries.

Defensively for the Colts, Aaron Keranen had eight tackles.

Defensively for White Pines, Noah Tarnai had four tackles.

Korah is set to face St. Mary’s on Sept. 13 in a 7:30 p.m. start at Superior Heights while White Pines faces Superior Heights on Sept. 14, also in a 7:30 p.m. start at Superior Heights.
