The defending city champions got off to a solid start as the senior girl’s high school basketball season opened on Thursday night.

The Korah Colts got off to a strong start and cruised to a 72-23 win at home over the Superior Heights Steelhawks.

Tori Ivey paced the Colts with 18 points while Grace Koski added 12 and Shea-Lynn Gioia chipped in with 11 points for Korah.

“We did a great job starting the game,” said Colts Coach Gary Cormier. “We seemed to have a lot of energy. We shot the ball extremely well in the first half and that gave us a push and gave the girls some confidence. When you have a number of girls scoring, it makes things a lot easier for us.”

Cormier went on to talk about the efforts across the board from his team.

“It’s an opening game so that’s always got a little bit of hype to it and it’s the last regular season opener that our grade twelves are going to play,” Cormier said. “We’ve got a lot of good efforts from everybody. Tori leads our team but we had a number of people contributing today. To play the opening game (of the season) in front of our own crowd was probably an incentive.”

In the junior game, Sophie Grawbarger had 11 points while Brayden Corbett-Lewis added eight points as Superior Heights narrowly beat Korah 34-33.

Skylar Toms and Samantha Hyde had eight points each for Korah.

In Thursday’s other senior game, Serena Pulente had nine points to pace St. Mary’s to a 24-19 win over White Pines. Brittany Cole paced White Pines with seven points.

Thursday’s other junior game saw Sophie Thomson score 12 points as St. Mary’s beat White Pines 55-11. Jalen Gagnon and Jacey Duguay added eight points each for St. Mary’s. Rain Brock had six points for White Pines.

Action continues on Sept. 27 when White Pines hosts Korah and St. Mary’s hosts Superior Heights. Start times are 5:15 p.m. for junior games and 7 p.m. for the senior games.
