CHL Roundup: Final two Memorial Cup participants determined

The final two participants for the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup in London have booked their spots in the event.

On Monday night, the Edmonton Oil Kings became the Western Hockey League representative with a game seven win over the Portland Winterhawks in Portland. The Oil Kings scored four times in the second period en route to a 4-2 win over the Winterhawks to secure their second Memorial Cup berth in three years.

The Oil Kings reeled off four-straight wins after falling behind 2-0 after the opening two games in Portland. Edmonton also became the first team in league history to win a game seven in the WHL final on the road.

Oil Kings goaltender Tristan Jarry made 32 saves in the win while Mads Eller had a goal and an assist offensively. Reid Petryk, Curtis Lazar and Mitchell Moroz also scored for Edmonton in the win.

Oliver Bjorkstrand and Brendan Leipsic scored for Portland. Winterhawks netminder Brendan Burke stopped 29 shots.

Edmonton will face the OHL-champion Guelph Storm in their Memorial Cup opener on Saturday in a 4 p.m. start.

In the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Anthony Mantha scored with 52 seconds left in regulation time to lift the Val-d’Or Foreurs to a 4-3 game seven win over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

Mantha had a goal and two assists in the win. Louick Marcotte had a goal and an assist while Samuel Henley and Randy Gazzola also scored. Foreurs goaltender Antoine Bibeau stopped 40 shots.

Jeremy Gregoire had a goal and an assist for Baie-Comeau while Nicolas Miloche set up a pair of goals in the loss. Gabryel Paquin-Boudreau and Felix Girard also scored for the Drakkar.

Val-d’Or needed the late goal by Mantha after the Drakkar scored three times in the third period to erase a three-goal deficit.

Val-d’Or advances to the Memorial Cup where they will open their tournament schedule on Friday night against the host London Knights in a 7 p.m. puck drop.
