Cech shines in Hounds loss to Guelph

Playing their third road game in as many days, the Soo Greyhounds dropped their second consecutive Ontario Hockey League game with a 2-1 loss to the Guelph Storm on Sunday afternoon.

Cech stopped 53 of the 55 shots he faced for the Greyhounds in being named the game's first star.

Danny Taylor also had an solid game in net for the Storm and stopped 30 straight shots until the Hounds' Matt Maccarone broke his shutout bid with 18 seconds remaining the game.

Daniel Girardi scored a power play goal for Guelph 55 seconds into the game while Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn added a goal in the second period.

The Greyhounds opened the road trip on Friday night with a 3-2 win in Kitchener, which was the team's seventh straight win. On Saturday in Toronto, the Hounds' streak ended with a 4-2 loss to the St. Michael's Majors.

For Cech, it was his second start on the road trip. Cech was also outstanding in Friday's win stopping 52 of 54 shots.

With the loss, the Greyhounds fall to 8-6-1 but remain in a first place tie in the west division with the Plymouth Whalers with 17 points each.

The Greyhounds begin a home stand on Wednesday against the Sarnia Sting beginning at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gardens. On Friday, Saginaw visits in a 7:30 p.m. start while the Plymouth Whalers come to town on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Wednesday's game will mark the return of Greyhounds' overage forward Jeff Doyle, who served the final game of a five game suspension on Sunday.

In other OHL action on Sunday, Corey Perry, Robbie Schremp and Dylan Hunter each scored twice as London hammered Belleville 9-2. Matt Iorianni stopped 31 shots as Peterborough blanked Brampton 1-0.

Patrick O'sullivan scored twice as the Mississauga Ice Dogs edged Sarnia 3-2 and Cory Vitarelli scored twice as St. Michael's beat Kitchener 5-2.

On Saturday, Dan LaCost made 24 saves as the Owen Sound Attack shutout the Saginaw Spirit 4-0. Anthony Stweart scored twice as Kingston beat Sudbury 3-1, former Soo Thunderbird Nathan O'Nabigon scored the winner as Kitchener edged Erie 3-2 while Barrie and Plymouth skated to a 3-3 tie.
