Around the horn: Black Sox 1-3 in Midland

It’s been a tough season for the Soo Black Sox midget team as they continue the 2014 baseball season. The team continued tournament action over the weekend as they played in the Gabby Mills Invitational in Midland, MI, posting a 1-3 record.

The team continued tournament action over the weekend as they played in the Gabby Mills Invitational in Midland, MI, posting a 1-3 record.

The team picked up a split on Friday, dropping game one 9-3 to Blasy Electric.

Eric Thornton homered and knocked in a pair of runs for the Black Sox. The veteran also walked twice. Adam Bouillion had a double and a single in the loss. Brad Manson also reached base twice in the opener with a pair of walks.

Scott Morphet walked three times for the Black Sox.

With Alpena pulling out of the tournament late on Thursday night, the Black Sox picked up a 7-0 forfeit win in their second game of the day on Friday.

To open the day on Saturday, the Black Sox dropped an 8-6 decision to Ida Post 514 in a game they led heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Black Sox jumped out to an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. With the game tied at two, the Black Sox took a 5-2 lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning, only to see Ida scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-5 lead, en route to the victory.

Jamis McMaster had a pair of hits in four plate appearances in the loss. Bouillion reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks in the game while Connor Henderson also walked twice.

The Black Sox wrapped up the tournament with a 14-3 loss to Thumb Baseball in a game that saw them give up 13 runs in a two-inning span in the loss. The Black Sox surrendered six runs in the fourth inning before giving up seven more runs in the fifth. The two big innings erased a 3-1 Black Sox lead in the process.

Eric Thornton had three hits, including a homer in four plate appearances. Thornton knocked in four runs in the game. Bob Winekler and Nathan Louguski knocked in three runs each in the win.

Bouillion, Morphet and Manson combined for the three Black Sox hits in the loss.

Earlier in the week, the Black Sox dropped a 13-4 decision in a rain shortened Great Lakes Baseball League game against the E.U.P. Post 3 Travelers. A nine-run second inning paced the Travelers to the victory.

Manson knocked in a pair of runs for the Black Sox in the loss. Kolbe Peller and Mitch Edison had three hits each for the Travelers.

The Black Sox are back in action on Tuesday night when they face the Travelers on the road as they travel to the Michigan-Sault in a 6 p.m. start. The team then travels to Petoskey to take on the Royals on Wednesday night in a double header.
