Aquatic Club dives over competition

Several members of the Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club had a very successful weekend as 28 swimmers were entered in two different competitions.

Four local swimmers had stellar performances for the North Eastern Ontario Regional all-star team which battled the team from Laurentian University while 24 swimmers performed well at a meet in Traverse City.

***************************** SSMAC starts new year in fast lane

Sault Ste. Marie Aquatic Club members were on the road over the weekend, with swimmers entered in competitions in Sudbury and Traverse City.

Four swimmers – Jeff Byrne, Shannon Hazelton, Suzie McGuire and Nick Shoust – were part of the North Eastern Ontario Regional all-star team that defeated the Laurentian University Varsity Vees squad in what was dubbed the Duel in the Pool.

Byrne finished first in the 100- and 200-metre butterfly and was on the medley relay winning team. Hazelton captured top spot in the 200-metre individual medley and added four second-place finishes. She was a member of the medley relay winning team.

Shoust registered second place finishes in the 50- and 100-metre breaststroke and was third in the 200-metre event.

McGuire had two fifth place finishes.

Meanwhile, 24 SSMAC members traveled to Traverse City for a dual meet with the Breakers Swim Club.

Leading the way for SSMAC were Becky Day with first place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle, the 50-yard butterfly and the 50-yard backstroke, Steven Lee, with wins in the 100-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle and the 25-yard backstroke, Kyle Matthews with first place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard butterfly and the 50-yard backstroke, and Alexandra Tracy with wins in the 100-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle and the 25-yard backstroke.

Others to register top-three finishes included Josh Lawrence (two firsts), Brian Lee (two firsts), Patrick Bonne, Julia Turgeon, Cary and Sarah Matthews, Carrie-Lynne Smale, Cait Tomlinson, Elyse and Claire McCarthy, Chelsea and Ryan Griswold, Jen Dailey, Chris Carlyle, Kelly Geiling, Michael Lawrence, and Megan Stark.

In medley relay action, the boys' 11-12 and girls' 9-10 teams recorded first place finishes while the girls' 8 and under, girls' 9-10, and girls' 11-12 team placed second.
