This February, Algoma University will play host to two elite sporting championships, the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Curling Championships, and the U Sports Wrestling Championships, which will see the best university student athletes in the country compete for coveted titles in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

“Sault Ste. Marie is pleased to welcome the top university curlers and wrestlers to our city for the Ontario University Athletics Curling Championship and U Sports Wrestling Championship. This is the first time Algoma University has hosted these two great events, and the fact they are doing so this year speaks to the progression of athletics at the University,” said Sault Ste. Marie Mayor, Christian Provenzano.

“I credit the University for pursuing these events, I encourage the community to support them, and I welcome the athletes to explore all our naturally gifted community has to offer.”

The OUA Curling Championship, slated for Feb. 15 – 19, will see the best student-athlete curlers from across the province compete at the Community First Curling Club.

Teams competing include the Algoma Thunderbirds, Brock Badgers, Carleton Ravens, Guelph Gryphons, Lakehead Thunderwolves, Laurentian Voyageurs, Laurier Golden Hawks, McMaster Marauders, Queen’s Gaels, Ryerson Rams, Toronto Varsity Blues, Trent Excalibur, UOIT Ridgebacks, Waterloo Warriors, and Western Mustangs.

The U Sports Wrestling Championship, happening days later, from Feb. 23 – 24 at the George Leach Centre (GLC), is the first university-level national championship being hosted by Algoma University and held in Sault Ste. Marie. Student-athletes from universities across Canada will take to the mats in an effort to earn a national gold, silver, or bronze medal.

“Our university community is very excited to have been selected to host both the OUA Provincial Championships and U Sport National Championships in February. What an incredible testament to the dedication and talent of our coaches, student-athletes, staff, and volunteers,” said President and Vice-Chancellor, Asima Vezina.

"This is not the first time Algoma has hosted events of this magnitude and we are honoured and look forward to welcoming wrestling and curling teams from across Ontario and Canada to Sault Ste. Marie next month. We would like to invite the entire community to come out and cheer our Algoma Thunderbirds as they compete on home turf for both the provincial curling and national wrestling titles. Go Thunderbirds, go!”

In 2016, Algoma hosted the OUA Wrestling Championships in the GLC, the first championship the institution hosted since joining the OUA in 2013. Both championships are free to attend and open to the public.
