****************************** Algoma University announces former Thunderbirds MVP as head coach

SAULT STE. MARIE - (October 28) - Algoma University is pleased to announce the appointment of Ryan Vetrie as head coach of the Thunderbirds Women's Basketball team.

Vetrie assumes his new role holding a wealth of experience both on and off the court.

Last season Vetrie worked alongside Thunderbirds men's varsity basketball coach Thomas Cory, as an assistant coach.

As a player, he was a key contributor to the success of the Men's Thunderbirds team during the 2007/2008 silver medal season, and earned team MVP honours in 2008/2009.

Vetrie went on to compete at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level with the Laurentian University Voyageurs and the University of Victoria Vikes.

"I am very excited that I've been given the opportunity to coach the Algoma Women's basketball team," says Vetrie. "I think I bring an intensity level and a hunger that is needed to help take the women's program in the right direction."

"Every time we step on the court I expect nothing less then giving it our all. I think we have a good group of dedicated players who have been through a lot of changes and are eager to get out on the court. The goal for the year is to make the playoffs and to give ourselves a chance to compete in the final eight."

"We believe that Ryan will make an outstanding head coach for our Women's program," comments Mark Kontulainen, athletics director for Algoma University. "He has an exemplary knowledge of the game of basketball. He has a competitive spirit and he knows how to win. Finally, he has been a student-athlete and understands the various pressures that it can bring. We know that Ryan will provide the best possible experience for his players."

The Thunderbirds begin the 2010/2011 season at home this week as they tip off in back-to-back games versus Mohawk College on October 29, and Niagara College on October 30.

Both events will take place at 6 p.m. at the George Leach Centre.
