Algoma basketball faces York, Queen's on road

The Ontario University Athletics basketball schedule saw Algoma University on the road to wrap up its pre-Christmas schedule over the weekend.

Algoma’s men’s and women’s teams were on the road to face York and Queen’s.

The Algoma men opened the weekend with a narrow 76-73 win over York on Friday.

Trailing 55-46 heading into the fourth quarter, Algoma outscored York 30-18 in the final quarter to pick up the victory. Jermaine Lyle had 18 points to lead Algoma. Jacob Clendinning (13 points), Sean Clendinning (11 points) and Adam Benrabah (10 points) also hit double-digits in scoring for Algoma.

Brandon Ramirez led York with 16 points. Jaden Frederick added 13 points while Nidun Chandrakumar had 12 points for York.

On Saturday, Algoma dropped an 85-77 decision at Queen’s. Algoma fell behind 49-26 in the first half and, despite outscoring Queen’s in the second half, couldn’t overcome the difference.

Cailum White led Algoma with 15 points while Nathan Riley had 14 points and nine rebounds. Jacob Clendinning had 13 points for Algoma. Sukhpreet Singh led Queen’s with 17 points while Tanner Graham added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

For the Algoma women, a tough opening quarter was the difference in a 59-52 loss to York on Friday. Algoma fell behind 20-9 in the first quarter and couldn’t fully overcome the start.

Algoma’s Karina Cole led all scorers in the game with 19 points. Sydney Resch chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds for Algoma. Ishanaa Seupersadsingh paced York with 14 points while Katrina Collins Samuels had 11.

On Saturday, the Algoma women’ wrapped up the pre-Christmas schedule with a 73-33 loss to Queen’s. Trailing 16-12 after one quarter, Algoma would shoot just 19.7 per cent from the field in the loss.

Carriera Lamoureaux had eight points while Marlee Ball had seven for Algoma. Veronika Lavergne led all scorers in the game with 14 points for Queen’s who got at least one point from every player on its roster in the game. Robyn Pearson added 11 points while Emily Hazlett chipped in with 10.

The Algoma teams return to action in the new year in a pair of games each at Waterloo beginning on Jan. 13.
