AAA Greyhounds in deep hole in semifinal

The GNML's Soo Greyhounds return home down 2-0 and needing to win three straight to advance

The Soo Greyhounds went on the road to open the Great North Midget League semifinal in Sudbury over the weekend.

Facing the second-place Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves, the Greyhounds face an 0-2 hole after dropping the opening two games of the best-of-5 series.

Sudbury opened the series on Saturday night with a 4-2 come-from-behind victory.

Noah Boman staked the Greyhounds to a 2-0 lead with goals just over three minutes apart late in the opening period but the Wolves would score four times in the third en route to the win.

Power play goals by Jacob Burton and Parker Savard pulled the Wolves even before Glenn Therrien scored at 19:30 to give the Wolves the lead. Burton would then seal the win with a goal at 19:59 of the period.

On Sunday, it took double overtime for the Wolves to take a 2-0 series lead as Joel Mongeon scored to give Sudbury a 3-2 victory.

Marc-Andrew Quevillon and Nik Valliant also scored for the Wolves.

Steven Bellini scored both goals for the Greyhounds.

The series now shifts to Sault Ste. Marie. Game three in the best-of-5 series is Feb. 25 at the Essar Centre. Puck drop is set for 8:30 p.m.

In the other GNML semifinal, the North Bay Trappers and Kapuskasing Flyers head into game three tied at one.

The Trappers opened the series on Friday night with a 2-1 victory. Ian Denomme’s goal at 13:19 of the third period was the game-winner. Matt Hardwick had the other North Bay goal.

Jacob Comeau had the lone goal for the Flyers in the series opener.

In game two on Saturday, Jacy Fillion sored the overtime winner as the Flyers evened the series at one with a 5-4 victory. Comeau and Sebastien Despatie had a goal and an assist each for Kapuskasing. Mathieu Parent and Samuel Bourdages also scored for the Flyers while Maxim Lacroix picked up three assists.

Denomme, Bailey Chenier, Joe Whittet and Ryan Mills scored for North Bay in the overtime defeat.

Game three in the series is set for Feb. 24 in Kapuskasing.
