The 2021 International 500 Snowmobile Race in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. has officially been cancelled.

Citing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, race organizers announced the decision on Thursday night via social media.

"Given our current circumstances, a risk assessment was completed by the International 500 Snowmobile Race Board of Directors," the statement said.

"We cannot in good conscience host the #SooI500 Race Week in 2021."

The Board announced that the 2022 event will run from Jan. 31 to Feb. 5, 2022.
