NEWS RELEASE

*********************** SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Chippewa County Shooting Association, along with the Soo Area Sportsmen's Club and a long list of local sponsors, will be host to its first Youth Shooting Day on Sunday, June 27, at the CCSA ranges on the corner of Ridge and 7 Mile roads. Up to 50 kids between the ages of 11-17 years may participate.

They must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and register in advance or at the range on Sunday.

Registration fee is $5. Club members said advance registration is best, as there are only 50 slots available for young shooters.

Registrations will be taken on the day of the shoot, but only to a total of 50. The daylong event will let young shooters experience several different shooting situations, including trap shooting, cowboy action, target rifles and archery. "The kids will learn about gun safety on the range and while hunting," said Fred Gregg, CCSA representative.

"They'll learn about the different types of rifles, pistols and shotguns; watch a muzzle-loading rifle demonstration, shoot .22 caliber rifles and reactive targets, and shoot rifles, pistols and shotguns that the cowboys shot 100 years ago.

The kids will also be able to use a 3-D archery range and shoot shotguns on the trap range. All equipment will be provided, including ear and eye protection.

Kids should not bring guns to the range, Gregg said.

Each shooter will receive a special T-shirt to commemorate the day. The CCSA and the Soo Area Sportsmens Club have been working together on the youth shooting day for several weeks, along with a variety of other local sponsors, including Wal-Mart's sporting goods department, Wilderness Treasures in Pickford, Chippewa County 4-H, the Connor Gorsuch Foundation and McCullough Construction. National sponsors include the National Wild Turkey Federation's Eastern U.P. Chapter.

Registration sheets are available at Wal-Mart, Hank's Sport Shop, Leitz Sports Center and Wilderness Treasures.
