NEWS RELEASE
THE KENSINGTON CONSERVANCY
*************************
The Desbarats Christmas Bird Count is a back for a second year! On Dec. 30, 2017, you can help count birds within a 12 km radius of Desbarats. Last year, 34 participants recorded 35 species and over 1,500 birds. Can we beat that this year?

The Kensington Conservancy is still looking for more participants to take part in this year’s count. You can participate as either a field observer or a feeder watcher. Field observers join an assigned group and travel around, counting birds within a designated area. Feeder watchers count bird coming to their backyard feeders from the luxury of their own homes.

The count circle includes the towns of Richards Landing, Hilton Beach, Desbarats and Bruce Mines. Areas such as McCarrel Lake, parts of Laird Township and Gordon Lake are included as well. All counting must be done within this circle.

Started in 1900, the Christmas Bird Count is North America's longest-running citizen science project. Counts happen in over 2,000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. The information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world's largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds throughout North America.
