NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA PUBLIC HEALTH

*************************

Influenza has arrived in Algoma and is present in much of Ontario.

There have been a number of lab-confirmed illnesses in our region in the last week.

Influenza can be a serious disease, especially in those with other health concerns.

The best way to prevent illness is with a flu shot.

This year's vaccine is a good match against the circulating virus to date.

Please call 541-2332 or 1‑800-469-2449 to book an appointment.

People of any age can get the flu. Illness due to influenza usually lasts two to seven days; sometimes longer in the elderly and in people with chronic diseases.

Most people who get influenza are ill for only a few days. However, some people can become very ill, possibly developing complications and requiring hospitalization.

In addition to flu immunization, there are other precautions you can take to help prevent getting the flu and spreading it to others:

• Washing your hands thoroughly and often may reduce your chances of getting sick.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough.

• If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve - not into your hands.

• Avoid sharing food, eating utensils, towels or handkerchiefs.

• Keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (gel or wipes) handy at work, home, and in the car.
